Holi Voice Yoga
"All matter, including our bodies, moves, vibrates, and produces different frequencies. Music and sound permeate the entire cosmos. It awakens the primal, the eternal within us. A longing for that which cannot die or be corrupted."
Wayne Teasdale / Russill Paul free translation

Healing vibrations
Sound healing/vocal yoga is based on several thousand years old yogic techniques. All matter, including our bodies, vibrates at different frequencies. When there is an imbalance, the vibrations of the voice can help restore balance. Holi voice yoga is based on the vibrations of your own voice. You tone vowels or consonants. It is an intimate, gentle inner movement that penetrates into your cells to soften, balance, and heal.
The vagus nerve is a very important part of your parasympathetic nervous system, your rest-and-digest system. It runs from the brainstem down through the torso, winding around your organs. It passes close to the throat and is stimulated by the vibrations of your voice. When this happens, the vagus nerve signals to your body that all is calm and that you are safe. The body can then relax and begin to produce hormones that heal, repair, and build up your cells. (Read more about the vagus nerve in conscious breathing).
The body consists of 70-80% water. About two-thirds of this water is found in and between the cells, which allows vibrations to propagate into the body’s cells and restore imbalances. In times of loss, grief, injury, or chronic pain/anxiety, we tend to shut off the energy. We guard and protect the vulnerable areas, which creates stagnation and tension. In Holiröstyoga, you create the space and relaxation needed to restore balance and allow for healing.
Anyone can practice Holi voice yoga
It is an effortless, fun, and heartfelt encounter with yourself and others. It is for those who enjoy using their voice, whether professionally or not. It is for those who experience tension in their voice or become easily fatigued. If you have significant issues, it’s recommended to consult a speech therapist. It’s not about sounding good, but about healing and balancing. It is for those who wish to heal both physically and spiritually.
We often use movement alongside the voice, but the movement is not the most important thing. Your intention, your thought, and your presence in where you want the vibrations to reach in your body are what matter. In Holiröstyoga, you are allowed to meet yourself and your voice without performance, comparison, or expectations.
In Holiröstyoga, you go inward, listen to the inner processes, and allow yourself to feel what feels true. The voice is allowed to sound exactly as it does here and now, with all its vulnerabilities. These vulnerabilities, which we often want to hide or mask, have the opportunity to heal when they are given a voice. We allow whatever wants to emerge to express itself. Sometimes it’s laughter, sometimes tears, and sometimes just emptiness. We support each other in being who we are, without pretension, expectations, or performance. It is then that we can nourish our innermost core.
When you practice Holiröstyoga, you strengthen your voice. It gains more resonance, deeper depth, and greater flexibility.
The vagus nerve and the parasympathetic part of the autonomic nervous system (ANS).
The vibrations from your voice, from others' voices, music, singing bowls, or drums stimulate the vagus nerve and the parasympathetic part of your autonomic nervous system; your calm and relaxation system. (Read more under Breathwork/Conscious Breathing). This is something we have known for all time. Mothers around the world sing lullabies to their children when they need to settle down for the night. Some of us sing to ourselves when we are scared. Studies have been conducted on choir singers, showing that when you use your voice, stress hormones decrease, the immune system is strengthened, and the production of endorphins increases. Simply put, using your voice makes you happy.
Mantra and chanting
Mantra is Sanskrit and means "that which protects and purifies the mind." A mantra is one or a few sentences that are repeated for several minutes, i.e., chanted. When you repeat the same words over and over again, the mind receives no new stimulation, and the thought process calms down. The brain gets to rest, and you become clear and focused afterward. There are mantras for different purposes, such as overcoming fear or honoring creation. We have 84 meridian points in the roof of our mouth that are stimulated when you repeat your mantra. This affects your pituitary gland, which regulates our hormones and stimulates your nervous system. Singing mantras has well-known effects on our well-being; physically, energetically, emotionally, and spiritually. The language is often Sanskrit, Gurumukhi, and nowadays even English.
